Mount Clemens, Mich., May 11, 2012 – Detroit-based SVS Vision is partnering with VSP® Vision Care and Transitions Optical to bring two fully-stocked, state-of-the-art mobile eye exam clinics, nicknamed “Eyenstein” and “SeeZar,” to Harms Elementary School in Detroit on May 22 from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Mulick Park Elementary School in Grand Rapids on May 24 from 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m., to provide free, comprehensive eye exams and eyewear to hundreds of students in need. This is the first outreach program for “SeeZar” and its addition will enable more kids to be accommodated.
Harms Elementary is located at2400 Central Street, inDetroit. Mulick Park Elementary is located at1761 Rosewood Avenue SE, inGrand Rapids.
While onboard Eyenstein and SeeZar, prequalified students requiring prescription lenses will have the opportunity to select eyeglass frames of their choice fitted with customized Transitions® adaptive lenses to help enhance their vision by reducing glare and blocking 100 percent of harmful UV radiation to preserve the future health of their eyes. Additionally, mobile literacy outreach program Bess the Book Bus will donate 1,000 books for children at the events, and Radio Disney will also be on hand with fun games.
“It was a natural decision to say yes to an opportunity to partner for the third year in a row with VSP, Transitions Optical and Bess the Book Bus,” said Cathy Walker, vice president of marketing and advertising, SVS Vision. “Because of our SVS Vision mobile eye exam program, we recognize just how great the need is inDetroitto offer this service, and with four office locations in theGrand Rapidsarea, we have also expanded this year’s outreach to the children ofGrand Rapids. The commitment of these partnering organizations is outstanding, and we’re excited to provide support through SVS doctors, UAW staff and our management team.”
Many parents rely on vision screenings in school to check for children’s vision problems; however, screenings are not enough. Common vision problems like poor eye coordination, lazy eye and farsightedness (not being able to see close up) are often missed during a screening. A comprehensive eye exam not only checks for these vision problems, but also for signs of chronic health conditions like diabetes, which is a growing problem among children.
“Eighty percent of classroom activity involves visual learning, yet studies show that one in four children has an undiagnosed vision problem that can interfere with the ability to read and learn,” said Dan McLean, marketing manager, communications, Transitions Optical. “Together, with our partners, VSP, SVS Vision and Bess the Book Bus, we are committed to making sure that students in Detroit and Grand Rapids have access to quality eye care and books that will help them succeed both in the classroom and in their everyday lives.”
Since the inception of Eyenstein in 2010, more than 2,800 children nationwide have received comprehensive eye exams onboard the clinic and approximately 1,350 children received free eyeglasses with Transitions lenses.
